1. Riviera dei Fiori cycleway

Sanremo is hotting up to become one of the best places to stay with the perfect mediterranean balance of sunshine, sea and views. Not to mention the 24 km cycle path stretching from Ospedaletti to San Lorenzo, which once upon a time used to be the old railway line, now beautifully laid with aspelt, flowers, cafes and the best sea views! The cycle path makes for the perfect introduction to the Sanremo area of Liguria, being a lovely 48 km round trip. Perfect for all the family or for the keen cyclist, a warm up before heading into the hills. Combine this with a few of the lower climbs such as Civezza, Cipressa or Poggio for a 70km or so ride with gentle elevations.

2. Medieval village tour

Dolceacqua is famous for its medieval village setting with a stone building and bridges and a glorious river flowing through the village. A beautiful castle to gaze at while sipping a well deserved coffee in the sunshine at one of the many cafes on the central square. On the way up to Bajardo, you also pass through two more stunning medieval villages- Isolabona and Apricale before the climb up to Bajardo. In the summer this can be quite a challenge so stock up on water- we know where to find fountains with natural spring water along the way. From Bajardo to Badalucco you have an amazing long descent, passing through Vignai, another beautiful mountain top village before Badalucco and then back to the coast. To shorten the route you can head straight back to Sanremo from Bajardo, passing through San Romolo or Ceriana. Approx 115 km/ 75 km with some epic climbs.

3. Liguria Sun and Sea

Liguria arguably has best coastline in the Mediterranean, so while you’re here it would a crime to to make the most of it. Start by breathing in the fresh salty sea air going east towards Spotorno passing through a couple of tunnels including one under a castle, for a seaside lunch. Enjoy the sea air, sunshine and blue skies.

Alternatively, head slightly inland at Albenga to Pieve di Teco for a tasty regional menu of the day before heading back along the undulating coast road which is also the final section of the Milan - Sanremo tour and also some of the amended 2020 route! This is a long day out with gradually accumulating elevation by the time you get back approx 130km Pieve loop or 180km Sportono.

4. Sospel and Breil

Truly magnificent, this is a big day in the saddle, heading west to Menton (France) and then inland through the French hillsides up to Sospel, a charming town with riverside cafes for a coffee and ice-cream. Next on the list is Breil, breathtaking views all the way like you have never seen before, aqua blue lakes, green flora, rocky cliffs! Before heading back down towards the coast. Approx 130 km

If you have the legs, take the switch back bends through Moulinet and up to Col de Turini - covered in the 2020 Tour de France!

5. Imperia hinterlands

Molini di Triora is famous for rock climbing and hill walks through the Argentine valley. A trip out to the hinterlands is hugely rewarding for the views and climbs. After a gradual rise to Molini, climb up and over to Pigna before rolling all the way back down to the coast, with a few obligatory coffee and photo stops along the way. Option to spin the legs out with a quick visit to San Lorenzo- just because you can before heading back to Sanremo. Approx 80 km/ 130 km. Alternatively, add more elevation by tackling the epic Passo Taglia at over 1500m on the way back from Molini instead of returning via Pigna!

6. Ligurian Hill climbing

This route can start through either Poggio or San Romolo as you head to Vignai. Vignai is a part of Liguria’s Olive Trail, so passing through the many beautiful olive lined strade and if you’re lucky you might spy a few ripe figs from the wild growing fig trees on the descent. Follow it through to Badalucco for a coffee stop (it may seem early but you’ll need it) then on to Carpasio - for another coffee boost to help you make it all the way to the top of San Bernardo di Conio. Cruise through one of the longest descents - 30km - all the way to Pieve di Teco for a tasty Ligurian feast and then roll back along the undulating coastal road. Approx 130 km
